First United Presbyterian Church

South 1st & Rodney Streets
Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201

The First United Presbyterian Church was incorporated in 1849. A new church building, on the corner of South Ninth (Rodney) and Eighth (South 1st) Streets in the Eastern District (Williamsburg), was erected at a cost of about $30,000 and dedicated on May 6, 1860.

In 1914, this congregation merged or disbanded and the building was acquired by Talmud Torah, a Jewish society of Williamsburg.

There was an organ in First United Presbyterian that was built by George N. Andrews (1832-1904), who became a partner in 1859 with his father, Alvinza Andrews, in Sangerfield, N.Y., before moving to Oakland, Calif., in 1888. The date of his organ for First United Presbyterian is unknown, but it may have been contemporary with the opening of the building in 1860.
