The congregation known today as Rugby Deliverance Tabernacle was established in 1907 by a group of local residents who gathered for weekly meetings in their homes. As the group grew, they began to meet at a local store located at 5010 Church Avenue and then in larger quarters at 4913 Church Avenue. On February 14, 1913 the society was formally incorporated as the Rugby Congregational Church with the Rev. R.E. Rutherford as their first pastor. The society purchased a plot of land on the corner of Snyder Avenue and East 49th Street, and on November 20, 1927, the cornerstone was laid for the present building. The completed church building was dedicated on Sunday, June 10, 1928.

On January 11, 2003, the name of the church was changed to the Rugby Deliverance Tabernacle under the leadership of the pastor, Archbishop Dr. Sidley R. Mullings. The church describes itself  as "a non-denominational church with an Evangelical/Pentecostal tenor of worship."
