First Union Baptist Church

2064 Grand Concourse near Tremont Avenue
The Bronx, N.Y. 10457

The First Union Baptist Church has worshipped at this location since 1976, after purchasing the building of Tremont Temple Gates of Mercy, a Reform Jewish congregation.

Tremont Temple Gates of Mercy's synagogue was dedicated in 1910. For the first few years, the congregation held services in the basement until they could afford to construct the rest of the building. By 1920, the temple was completed, a magnificent neo-classic, columned building, with a daring, gigantic Star of David on the roof. Tremont Temple became an important center of Jewish life in the area. However, by the 1960s the neighborhood had changed and many of the families had moved to the suburbs. During the 1970s, membership had declined to the point where the officers felt they had to consolidate with a congregation in Westchester to remain viable. In 1976, Tremont Temple merged with and moved to the Scarsdale Synagogue.
