Mount Calvary United Methodist Church
116 Edgecombe Avenue at West 140th Street
New York, N.Y. 10030
Mount Calvary Independent Methodist Church was organized around 1920 by a group that left the Bethel A.M.E. Church. At the beginning, the new congregation rented a room on the second floor of the Lafayette Building, but within a few years they were able to purchase the present building, erected as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, a large Gothic edifice built in 1897-98 to designs by Henry Andersen. Mt. Calvary Church struggled in the early years and through the Depression, but in the 1940s the membership peaked to 1,500, making it one of the largest Methodist churches in Harlem. |

J.H. & C.S. Odell
New York City – Opus 615 (1956)
Electro-pneumatic action
2 manuals, 20 stops, 20 ranks
In 1956, the existing Odell organ (Op. 396, 1903) was rebuilt by Odell as Op. 615. Odell disassembled and restored the organ to 'new-like' condition, and installed electric action primaries to replace the old tubular-pneumation action. The console shell came from St. David's Episcopal Church, The Bronx. Odell's contract price for this rebuild was $5,450. |
