St. Luke's Mission Chapel
(Episcopal)

28 Edgecombe Avenue
New York, N.Y. 10030

In 1922, St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church, which in 1892 had relocated to 435 West 141st Street from its Hudson Street location in Greenwich Village, established the St. Luke's Episcopal Mission for Negroes. A chapel seating 300 was created in an old row house at 28 Edgecombe Avenue, near 136th Street. By the 1920s, African-Americans were moving into Harlem, and the mission was probably an effort to keep African-Americans segregated from the regular parish. The church is now home to New Hope Seventh-day Adventist Church.
