Bethel Baptist Church began in 1906 as the Holy Trinity Baptist Mission, founded by Rev. Timothy White. The mission was renamed Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. White as its first pastor. As the congregation outgrew its place of worship, property measuring 50 by 100 feet at 261-65 Bergen Street was purchased for $8,500, and ground was broken in the Spring of 1914 for a new church. The mortgage was burned in 1920, and in 1924 the adjoining lot was purchased for $3,100. The present edifice was built in the summer of 1923, and dedicated in October 1924.
