Carlton Theatre
292 Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11217
 |
|
Exhibitors Herald (April 17, 1926) |
|
The Carlton Theatre was built on the site of an earlier Carlton Theatre built in 1911 that had seating for 450 plus an airdome theatre added in 1913. Both theatres were both closed on May 10, 1925, after which they were demolished except for the main facade. The "new" Carlton Theatre was opened on February 8, 1926 and was operated by the
Brandt Circuit. It had a 1,124-seat airdome theatre on the roof that was decorated in an Italianate style.
The Carlton was named for nearby Carlton Place, yet it stood on Flatbush Avenue at Seventh Avenue, a block north of the Flatbush Pavillion (formerly the Plaza). The theater had a balcony, and in its later days ran kung-fu and blaxploitation movies.
It closed in the early 1980's and became the Brooklyn Tabernacle—the first theater in Brooklyn to be converted into a church—which later moved into the far more spacious former Metropolitan Theater. The Carlton was demolished in 2004. |

Wurlitzer Organ Company
North Tonawanda, N.Y. – Opus 1224 (1925)
Style "H Special"
2 manuals, 10 ranks, 6 tuned percussions, 14 traps, curved console
Wurlitzer's Opus 1224 for the Carlton Theatre was shipped on December 15, 1925. It was a "Style H Special" in that the Tuba was on 15" rather than the normal 10" wind pressure. This organ was later moved intact to a residence in Florida. |
