Williamsburg Baptist Church was founded in 1823. The congregation's first edifice was located on the corner of Fifth and South Fifth Streets. In 1885 the society moved to a new building on the southeast corner of Keap Street and Lee Avenue; this building was sold in 1934 to Williamsburg Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ congregation, who in turn sold the building in 2001 after which it was razed.

The following specification was recorded by F.R. Webber, whose "Organ Scrapbooks" are in the possession of The Organ Historical Society Archives in Princeton, N.J. Webber visited the organ on February 24, 1955, and wrote:
The organ appears to be in its original condition, and the attached console is as Johnson & Son built it. No tonal changes appear to have been made.

The organ in the original church building was built in 1866 by J.H. & C.S. Odell of New York City. From the Odell Specification and Agreement (May 1, 1866) we read that the organ was "to be enclosed in a gothic case made of pine grained oak with large speaking pipes in front illuminated or gilt." Odell included eight "Patent Pneumatic Composition" pistons and a Crescendo movement. The organ cost $3,200.
