Loew's Alhambra Theatre
783 Knickerbocker Avenue at Halsey Street
Brooklyn, N.Y. 11207
The Alhambra Theatre, located on Knickerbocker Avenue in the Bushwick
section of Brooklyn, opened on December 31, 1914, as a vaudeville
theatre operated by the Ward & Glynne circuit. As designed by
Arthur G. Carlson of Carlson & Wiseman, the Alhambra originally
had 1,661 seats, but in 1918 it was enlarged, with a balcony added,
and the seating capacity became 2,200. In 1923, when Loew's acquired
W & G's Astoria Theatre in Queens, it also took over the Alhambra
and ran it for several years. Noted theatre architect Thomas Lamb remodeled
the Alhambra in 1927. The Alhambra closed in 1951 and the building
was later used by a supermarket; later it was used as a
day care center. |
