St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church was started about 1867 as a mission on Fulton Street. The society later relocated to Gates Avenue near Ralph Avenue where a small edifice with seating accomodations for 300 was erected. Another move took the church to its present location on Jefferson Avenue at Patchen Avenue where a wooden building was erected. At some point, St. Martin Episcopal Church, located at 293 President Street, merged into St. Stephen and the consolidated congregation was renamed St. Stephen and St. Martin Episcopal Church.

"During the last year the parish has bought an organ of Mr. Earles, of Riverhead, L.I., an instrument remarkable for its sweetness of tone and fine appearance. The members have worked with a great deal of energy in striving to liquidate the debt."
