Temple Adath Israel was one of several congregations by that name.
One of them was founded in 1889 and was
located at 793 East 169th Street.
The second Temple Adath Israel was organized in 1896 and held its
services in a house on Jefferson Place until 1901. At that time,
the congregation
purchased the former St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church
at 551 East 169th
Street, where the building was razed and a new synagogue built
on the same site. In 1927, the synagogue was sold to the
Morrisania Baptist Church and a new building was erected on the
Grand Concourse and
169th
Street. For many years, the temple's cantor was a man named Reuben
Tucker; he later became known as Richard Tucker, the world-famous
Metropolitan Opera tenor.
In 1973 the Congregation Adath Israel merged with the Conservative
Synagogue of RIverdale, located at 475 West 250th Street in the
Riverdale area of The Bronx. The building was sold to Grand
Concourse Seventh-day Adventist Church. |
