Original Interior (1952)

The Eighth Church of Christ, Scientist, located directly across the street from Lenox Hill Hospital, has been at its present site for many years. The present red brick, steepled church, designed by C. Dale Badgeley and erected in 1950-51, includes architectural elements of Art Deco and Georgian styles.

In the mid-1970s, the church interior was extensively redecorated, in part to accomodate the Hellmuth Wolff tracker organ, installed in 1977.

Laval, Québec, Canada – Opus 20 (1977)
Mechanical key, electric stop action
2 manuals, 25 stops, 28 ranks

The Hellmuth Wolff mechanical action organ, installed in 1977, has two manual divisions. A third keyboard functions as a permanent coupling manual. Prior to the installation of the organ, the church removed draperies and carpets, hardened the wall and ceiling surfaces, and improved the lighting.

In 2015, Meloni & Farrier Organbuilders installed a solid state combination action with multiple memory levels. In order for the new system to function properly, the mechanical stop action had to be replaced with electric solenoids. The original stop knobs were retained.

The original organ in the present edifice was built in 1952 by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Co. of Boston. Installed entirely above the ceiling, the organ spoke through a grill.

When the new Hellmuth Wolff organ was installed in 1977, the Aeolian-Skinner organ was moved to St. Peter's Church, Glenside, Penn., where it was installed with a new Austin console.
