Original building of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church - New York City
The congregation known today as Emmanuel Presbyterian Church was established in 1852 as a chapel of the University Place Presbyterian Church. Its first building, dedicated in 1874 and located on East Sixth Street between Avenues C and D, housed a large Sabbath school which ministered to German immigrants in the Lower East Side. In 1918, after the University Place church merged into First Presbyterian Church, the chapel gained church status, and was now Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

In 1953, Joseph Papp, then a producer for CBS, began an actors' workshop in the church basement, where it remained for the next three years.

In 1970, the present church was built on the site of the original building.
