Mecca Theatre
227-241 Avenue A
New York, N.Y. 10009
The 1,947-seat Mecca Theatre first opened in 1926 and was one of four theatres on the Lower East Side built and operated by Harry Blunderman and Charles Stemer. The Mecca was never a first-run movie house and competed with many other theatres in the area. It closed c.1934-35, but was occasionally and briefly reopened over the next years until 1943, when it was purchased by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and demolished for the building of Stuyvesant Town, an enormous residential complex. |
