New York Pro Musica Antiqua
New York City
The New York Pro Musica Antiqua, a vocal and instrumental ensemble, was co-founded in New York City in late 1952 by choral conductor Noah Greenberg and the recorder player Bernard Krainis. Pro Musica was a combination of Greenberg's Primavera Singers and Krainis's Saint Cecilia Players, and both groups had been formed solely to make recordings. Pro Musica was one of the earliest groups to attempt historically correct performances of early music, and the specialized in compositions of 1200 to 1700. Pro Musica researched and reconstructed much of the music it performed, and restored or constructed instruments such as the sackbut, shawm, crumhorn, zinke, viola da gamba, and portative organ. The ensemble was famous for its annual production of the Play of Daniel, a medieval music drama. Pro Musica disbanded in 1974. |
