Harry Hall
West Haven, Conn. (1899); reb. Anthony Meloni (1983)
Mechanical key and stop action
Electric pedal action
2 manuals, 15 stops, 20 ranks
This organ was built in 1899 by Harry Hall of West Haven, Conn., for St. Rose of Lima Convent in Meriden, Conn. As originally built, the nine-stop mechanical action organ had a divided windchest with three stops on the Great and five stops on the Swell, plus the Pedal Bourdon. See the original specifications below.
In 1979, the organ was acquired by Mr. Nixon and moved to New York City with the assistance of Ronald Ebrecht, a student at Yale. Only two of the stops (Swell Stopped Diapason and Pedal Bourdon) came with the purchase as the others were incorporated into the 1917 Austin Organ (Op. 701) in St. Rose of Lima Church.
Anthony Meloni was enlisted to rebuild the organ, this being his first attempt at such a project. Meloni removed the Swell shades and expanded the chromatic windchest by adding three stops where the shades and walkboard had been. The two Hall stops were reused, and additional stops were obtained from various sources, including the 1931 Casavant (Op. 1440) built for the old Juilliard School, and from Heissler and Stinkens pipe builders. All of the Pedal stops were installed on a new electric-action chest. The organ was voiced by Mr. Meloni, Gil Adams, Jack Steinkampf and Larry Trupiano, and the organ was completed in 1983.
In 1989, the organ was sold to University Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, and was moved, installed and revoiced by Bernard Cavaliere. |
