The parish of St. Raphael was established in 1886 to serve the Irish Catholics of Hell's Kitchen. George H. Streeton designed the present neo-Gothic church that was built in 1902. An impressive facade is built of stone and includes two towers; the sides and rear of the church are faced in red brick with stone details. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan was a parishioner and also cast his first vote in St. Raphael's Church. As the neighborhood declined, the church became a mission of Holy Innocents Church. In 1974, St. Raphael's building began to house SS. Cyril and Methodius Church, a Croatian congregation founded in 1913 and previously located at 552 West 50th Street.

The cost of the organ was $1,500, with $500 due in cash within ten days after the organ was setup and complete in the church, and the balance of $1,000 apparently taken in consideration of the old organ which was located in the Odell factory. Odell anticipated that their Op. 427 would be set up on or before November 20, 1906.
