Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Bernard's
(Roman Catholic)
(originally Church of St. Bernard)
330 West 14th Street
New York, N.Y. 10014
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Bernard was established in a wagon factory located on West 13th Street. The present church was designed by architect Patrick C. Keely and built from 1873-75. Keely also designed the similarly detailed Church of the Holy Innocents on West 37th Street near Herald Square. St. Bernard has the distinction of being the first church to be dedicated by John Cardinal McCloskey, the first American cardinal. In 2003, the Archdiocese of New York merged the nearby parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe with St. Bernard's, renaming the church Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Bernard's. |

J. H. & C. S. Odell
New York City – Opus 294 (1891)
Mechanical key and stop action
2 manuals, 31 stops, 35 ranks The current organ, built in 1891 by J.H. & C.S. Odell of New York, replaced the smaller 1881 Odell, Op. 187, which burned in 1890. The organ enjoys a lofty position in the rear gallery of the resonant church. Although the overall sound is somewhat mild, it fills the space admirably. Decorated façade pipes are displayed in three sections of the flat case, which overlooks the attached two-manual terraced drawknob console.
The bracketed stop names indicate the present names, which are changes from the original specifications. |
