St. Paul Baptist Church was established in 1893 on West 43rd Street in west midtown, which was then an important black neighborhood of New York City. The church moved to West 29th Street, and then to the former Congregation Beth Israel at 352 West 35th Street, before moving to Harlem. The present building, erected in 1928, was designed by Helmle, Corbett & Harrison, and is a blend of Deco and Romanesque styles.
