The Parish of St. Rita of Ravenswood was organized in 1894 as a mission of St. Patrick's Church in Dutch Kills. Records show, however, that the first Mass was said in Ravenswood as far back as 1833, by Father Phelan. Until a church could be built, Mass was led by Rev. William J. McGuire in a store located on the Boulevard between Webster and Washington Avenues, and later in a hall on Hancock Street. Ground was broken for a permanent church in March 1900, and the cornerstone was laid by Bishop McDonnell on April 22, 1900. The brick and stone church measured 45 feet by 100 feet and provided seating for 500. Total cost of the church was $17,000. It was dedicated by Bishop McDonnell on September 6, 1900.
The present church is a contemporary structure of brick and concrete with a slightly peaked roof. The interior features marble floors, light oak woodwork, and a 30 foot ceiling. Stained glass windows line the side and back walls, providing natural illumination to the spacious nave. |
