Temple Israel

Roanoke Avenue & State Street
(now Dinsmore Avenue & Nameoke Street)
Far Rockaway (Queens), N.Y. 11691

Temple Israel was a Reform synagogue organized about 1907 by a handful of devout Jews in Far Rockaway. Early meetings and services were held in the Horton Building on Central Avenue, after which the society moved to the Masonic Temple on Mott Street when it opened in 1911. Meanwhile, a plot of land on the corner of Roanoke Avenue and State Street (now named Dinsmore Avenue & Nameoke Street) was purchased and construction began on a permanent temple building. The cornerstone was laid in 1908, and the completed building was dedicated in July 1911.

In 1930, the congregation moved to new quarters on Central Avenue Lawrence, N.Y., which is in Nassau County. The old synagogue building was sold to Congregation Knesseth Israel, an Orthodox congregation founded in Far Rockaway in 1922.
